Roomy kitchen with storage rooms (behind the cameraman)
After renting for 11 years in 4 different locations, thanks to our donors, we built a home in 2012 on 2 acres of land, in a rural setting. The main house includes five bedrooms, with four boys in each room; three bathrooms for the boys; 4 ensuite staff bedrooms; a spacious sitting room; study area with small library and computer section, a beautiful kitchen, and lovely porches. In 2017 we added a 4-bedroom house for two additional staff, as well as two bedrooms for boarding 8 school boys to stay during school breaks.
We are located in part of Athi River, Machakos County, on a breezy, semi-arid hillside off Mombasa Road near the junction of Machakos. This is a rural area called Kyumbi (pronounced Choom'-vee), surrounded by the Kapiti Plains where giraffe, ostrich, gazelles, and a host of other wildlife live. We are within walking distance of the government primary school, where our boys now attend, and an hour’s walk from the church which they hike to faithfully each Sunday. Public transport is available at the junction, about 4 km. away from our home.
Orphans’ Joy donated money to purchase a greenhouse in 2014, where we have raised a variety of vegetables for ourselves and sale to neighbors. Corn, beans, spinach, kale, and sweet potatoes are grown outside the greenhouse for our own use. We also have a few chickens.
Due to the mandate of the Department of Children's Services to close children's homes, we are considering alternate usage of the property. Contact ahadifamilyk@gmail.com if you are interested.
